The Treehouse Hexagon Quilt Project

The Treehouse Hexagon Quilt Project © Red Pepper Quilts 2022 #hexagonquilt #englishpaperpieced

My first official finished quilt for 2022 and my goodness, I so love everything about this quilt. It is of course another slow sewing project - English paper pieced - a process that continues to hold all of my attention. Hexagons especially are a favorite. I know they're not for everyone, as they can be tedious to piece with lots of stop/start seams. But I just love them, I could sew hexagons all day, every day right now.

This quilt is designed by Emma from Treehouse Textiles, and was designed for the 2021 Treehouse Textiles Block of the Month program. Late last year Emma sent me the pattern after I messaged her to see if the pattern would be available after the completion of the Block of the Month program. I started working on this quilt late November 2021 and finished the quilt top on 27 December 2021. Well, December was a month of joyous fabric play and stitching!

I think what really drew me to this quilt was the unique layout and the mix of low volume - light/white - background prints. It reminded me of my love for low volume prints and quilts, even if that means taking good photos is made so much harder! The light, especially in Summer, seems to bounce off the walls and off the quilt, and I as a novice photographer, I struggle to control it. With such quilts, the best I can do is patiently wait for the perfect day light; preferably a gently overcast day and those have been few and far between this Summer.

I have finished this quilt by machine quilting edge to edge straight vertical lines, spaced evenly across the quilt, and using the hexagon "corners" as a guide for keeping the lines nice and straight. I do actually enjoy straight line quilting! I know that must seem rather odd. I find it relaxing, and a nice way to spend some time with a quilt that I have already put many hours into.

For the back of the quilt I have used a much loved and often used print: Newsprint from the Story collection by Carrie Bloomston. I have found this fabric so versatile, and the perfect backing fabric that works well with many of my quilts. I have more yardage of this fabric on hand!

For the binding I have used a wide navy/white stripe fabric - this stripe fabric is by Moda Fabrics from the Essentially Yours collection. In the same way that I enjoy spending time with the quilt while quilting it, I have also enjoyed hand slip-stitching the binding to finish the quilt. Happy sewing, right down to the very last stitch.

Modern Hexagon Quilt

A Finished Quilt
Modern Hexagon Quilt © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Hexies are my favorite! I keep coming back to this shape for English paper piecing, and even though the hexagon shape doesn't lend itself to continuous piecing - there's a lot of stop/start sewing - I still love it. Hexies are so versatile, the layout possibilities are endless, and with the right mix of fabric you can have a traditional quilt with a modern feel.

The fabrics used for this quilt (other than the background fabric) were once again pulled from my stash and many are from my loved hoarded Japanese fabrics (by Yuwa Fabrics and Kei Fabrics). The solid background fabric was specifically purchased for this project and it is Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton in Malibu.

Modern Hexagon Quilt © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

The quilt has been machine quilted (domestic sewing machine) with edge to edge vertical lines, spaced one inch apart. Keeping the stitching lines straight is easier than it looks as there are lots of stitching guide points to ensure that the quilting lines stay nice and straight. I do also use a quilting guide attached to the walking foot, which also helps to keep the lines parallel.

For the back of the quilt I have used one of my very favorite Japanese fabrics by Suzuko Koseki for Yuwa Fabrics. This is such a fun design, and perfectly suited the aesthetic of the quilt. It is a beautiful quality cotton fabric, featuring random items including clothing items, hats, shoes, handbags with contents scattered throughout, and the Eiffel tower. Fashion + Paris.

For the binding I have used the same color solid fabric: Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton in Malibu.

All the Stars Quilt

All the Stars Quilt - English Paper Pieced © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

I am on a roll - another week and another new quilt to show you, this one too was started and finished in 2021. I love all sorts of quilts, from modern quilts to art quilts - I can appreciate them all - but traditional scrappy quilts steal my heart every time. I have had this quilt, a classic 6-pointed star quilt, on my quilting buckets lists for quite some time, and am pleased to have now ticked it off.

This quilt has been English paper pieced and it consists of just one shape: a sixty degree diamond with 2 inch sides. I told you, I have fallen deep into the English paper piecing rabbit hole. I have made numerous paper pieced quilts now, and there are more to come. I find it so relaxing, and the results are effortlessly accurate. I love the whole process; from choosing and cutting fabrics, to basting paper pieces, and long evenings of whip stitching.

All the Stars Quilt - English Paper Pieced © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Other than the background fabric, this quilt was made from stash fabrics. I have randomly selected fabrics, prints and colors, although with somewhat of a bias towards my hoarded Japanese fabric stash. I adore the saturated colors of those Japanese fabrics. The background fabric was purchased specifically for this project.

The quilt has been machine quilted (domestic sewing machine) with edge to edge vertical lines, spaced one inch apart. As I've used a shape with two inch sides, there are lots of stitching guide points to ensure that the quilting lines stay nice and straight. I do also use a quilting guide attached to the walking foot, which also helps to keep the lines parallel.

Backing fabric: Octopus in Blush - Mendocino by Heather Ross
Now for the back of the quilt I have used a rather special fabric which has been languishing in my "quilt back" stash for a while. This fabric is from the Mendocino collection by Heather Ross. It is the softest pink background fabric, scattered with octopuses. Rather sweet. Plus I do actually like using my fabric from stash.

For the binding I have used a soft green and white stripe fabric from the Merry Go Round collection by American Jane for Moda Fabrics. Again, pulled from stash. Super satisfying.

I so loved making this quilt that I am seriously contemplating making another, but with smaller stars still. Perhaps from diamonds with 1 1/2 inch sides or more likely 1 3/4 inch sides.

Thank you again for stopping by,

The June Dyson Coverlet

A Finished Quilt
June Dyson Coverlet - Handmade Patchwork Quilt © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Continuing this week with another 2021 finished quilt. This quilt is June Dyson Coverlet; a pattern by Emma from Treehouse Textiles in Mornington (not far from Melbourne, in fact the perfect day trip from Melbourne, and a fabric store truly worthy of visiting in person!). Emma has a unique eye for pattern and fabric/color placement and her quilts and patterns are on my quilting bucket list.

I started this quilt at the end of May this year and finished it some time in July. The quilt consists of just two shapes - an octagon and a square - and much like a traditional hand pieced Trip Around the World Quilt it was pieced from the center out. I chose to English paper piece my quilt for that process continues to give me so much joy, and I find it a super accurate way to piece. I love the fabric placement for this quilt, and found myself spending a lot of time audition fabric after fabric fabric.

All fabric used are designer quilting cottons, and include prints by popular fabric designers like Heather Bailey and Heather Ross, and by Cotton + Steel and Ruby Star. The large scale gingham fabrics are woven checks from Cotton + Steel (Checkers). I cannot resist a gingham fabric, and you'll regularly see them make an appearance in my quilts.

And I have finished the quilt with a stiped fabric. In this instance I have used a dark blue and white striped fabric. I have somewhat of a tendency to accent my quilts with a black/white stripe quilt binding but in this instance I thought the blue/white would work equally well.

More soon! I have several more quilts that I have finished this year that I would like to share with you before the end of the year. That's the plan anyway.

Thank you again for stopping by.
